Virudhunagar, also called as Virudhupatti, ‘Kalvi maavattam’ (Educational district). It is a south Indian state of Tamil Nadu which is located southwest of the state capital Chennai and 53 km from Madurai. In British rule it is one of the important trading centres. This town is the birthplace of K. Kamarj, former chief minister of Tamil Nadu, and he is a Bharat Ratna recipient. It is located on the east of Kowsika River. Before Independence this land was administered by many empires, like Pandyas, Vijayanagara Empire, Madurai Nayaks, Chanda Sahib, Carnatic kingdom and the British Empire. Pilavakkal Dam near Watrap

Pilavakkal Dam is located on the foot hills of Western Ghats in Virudhunagar district (in the place of Watrap). This dam surrounded by green paddy fields. Andal temple at Sriviliputur

Sriviliputur is a temple town and it is one of the 108 divya desams of Lord Sri Vishnu. Andal gave the excellent language work called Tiruppavai. Ayyanar falls

Ayyanar Falls are situated 10 kilo meters away from Rajapalayam, municipality and city in Virudhunagar district. This falls get water source mainly during the North East Monsoon rain. This water is mainly used for drinking purposes by the people who are living in Rajapalayam. It is one of famous tourist spot. A dam is located on the drive to Ayyanar Falls which provides water for the entire city.

Shenbagathoppu

Shenbagathoppu is located on the Western Ghats. Here, wildlife sanctuary has established in the year 1989. The sanctuary spreads over an area of 190 sq ml. The water fall is visited a lot in winter and rainy season. The town is well-connected by a good road. Regular bus service is available to this fall.

Sanjeevi Hills

It is located in Rajapalayam. Sanjeevi mount is located on the way towards Chatrapatti. The tranquillity of the hills makes it an ultimate spot for tourists. Myth holds that in order to save Lord Lakshmana Hanuman carried the complete hill with its herbal plants to Sri Lanka. And after that the hill was thrown which came to be called as Sanjeevi Hills.

Sathuragiri Hills and temples

Sathuragiri Hills or Chathuragiri also called as ' SUNDARA MAHALINGAM ' is located 10 Kilo meters away from Watrap (Wathirairuppu) which is located near Srivilliputhur. The name Sathuragiri came from Chathur (4) Veda (Vedas) Giri (Hill), which means where all the four Vedas met and made the hill. Another meaning is that the entire mountain is in square in Tamil it is called “Chathuram” in shape so the name Chathuragiri. Sathuragiri is the Abode of God. It is also called as Mahalingam Hill. Sathuragiri hills popularly called "Siddargal boomi” which means Siddar’s earth. 18 Siddhas were used to live here. Abode of God was bending position. Another God calls Santhana Mahalingam up to 4 Kilo Meters away from Periya Mahalingam statue in forest and rivers. Navagraga stone in top of hill. This is an enigmatic hill where it is believed that Siddhars still worship the lord Shiva. Pilgrims coming from Chennai direction has to come to Madurai and get down at Krishnan Koil Bus Stop on the way to Srivilliputhur then go to Watrap (Wathirairuppu).

From Watrap have to go to Thaanipaarai, the base of the hill. Buses are available even from Srivilliputhur itself to Watrap and Thaniparai. For the first time, it takes nearly 4 to 5 hours to climb to the Top of the hill. Rest, can reach the top within 2 to 3 hours. On the hill there is no electricity, no telephone connection, and no range for cell phones. We can find few number of shops selling buttermilk, coffee, eatables, etc. During some days like full moon day, new moon day and other festive seasons Annadhanam is served to the devotees from morning till evening near both the temples and stay in the shelter provided there before dark falls. Basic amenities are provided at the hill. Annadhanam (Free Food) is Provided to the Pilgrims on almost all days especially No Moon Days and Full moon days by several Annadhanam Madam/Volunteers. "Sathuragiri Kanji madam" which is managed by "Sree Kalimuthu Swamigal Trust" provides food for all devotees at any time at free of cost. Arulmigu agathiyar annathana Arakkattalai provided free food in all days. Siva Sangu Iyya Avarakalin annnthanam in sathuragiri hills during full moon only. He issues free Note Books to poor children from his trust Money. Also Thiru Siva Sangu Ayya has built One Maha Kali temple in Thaanipaarai which is very Power full temple where Yagnas are conducted.
