Tourist places in Kanyakumari


Kanyakumari is also called as Kumarimunai, formerly called as Cape Comorin. It is located at the southernmost tip of the Indian subcontinent. The nearest major city is Nagercoil; it is the administrative headquarter of Kanyakumari District which is 22 KMs away from town of Kanyakumari. This district is one of the exquisite tourist spot which is very famous all over the world. It is a highest literacy rate district in Tamil Nadu having 88.62%.

Mahatma Gandhi Memorial(Gandhi Mandapam)


The place has been linked with legend men like Swami Vivekananda and Mahatma Gandhi. It is very marvelous and exquisite which is very plus to the attraction of this place. This Gandhi memorial completed in the year 1956, it is located as a memorial to Father of the Nation. The urn of Mahatma Gandhi was kept here. Mahatma Gandhi visited Kanyakumari twice in 1925 and 1937 respectively. Its central shape is 79 feet for representing the age of Mahatma Gandhi at the time of sun at mid day on 2nd October. Visiting hours are -7 AM to 7 PM.



Thiruvalluvar Statue


Thiruvalluvar is the eternal poet of Tamil Nadu and has given to the globe Thirukkural. This statue is located in Kanyakumari. The base of the statue is 38 feet height and the statue over it is 95 feet tall with a grand total of 133 feet for the entire sculpture. The three tier pedestal called as Atharapeedam is encircled by an artistic Mandapam called as Alankara Mandapam with the height of 38 feet. In Alankara Mandapa stand there are 10 elephant statues tells 8 directions with earth and space down. In order to worship the sacred Thiruvalluvar you should walk 140 steps which is constructed inside the Mandapam. The pedestal is the height of 38 feet which denotes 38 chapters in the Book of Aram in Thirukkural and the statue 95 feet represent the total chapter in Porul (70 chapters) and Inbam (25 Chapters). So, it is basically and artistically signifies the theme of Porul and Inbam are based on Aram. You can visit this temple 8 A.M to 4 P.M.


Kamarajar Manimandapam


Another memorial Kamarajar Manimandapam was raised and dedicated to Late. Sri. Kamarajar, The freedom fighter and Former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, President of Indian National Congress etc. He is popularly called as Black Gandhi during the congress regime. This memorial was constructed where his ashes were kept it here for public to pay homage before immersion in to the sea. The visiting hour of the memorial is 7 A.M to 7 P.M.


Vivekananda Rock Memorial


It is a place in Kanyakumari which captivate large number of tourists in national as well as international. It is dedicated to Swami Vivekananda. It was constructed by Vivekananda Rock Memorial Committee for the purpose of commemorate the visit of Swamy Vivekananda to “Shripada Parai” during 24th, 25th, and 26th December in the year 1892 for deep meditation and enlightenment. From very olden times, it has been considered as holy place. In Puranic tradition it has been called as “Sripada Parai”, which means the rock has been blessed by the touch of Shripada feet of the Goddess. This fort has little brownish in complexion.

Sunrise and Sunset is very famous in Kanniyakumari which is known all over the globe. We can see in Kanniyakumari throughout the year at Bay of Bengal. You can also see from view tower throughout the year except the months of June, July and August


View Tower and Telescope House


You can see Panoramic view of landscape, sea coast, Thiruvallurvar Statue, Vivekananda Rock, etc. Visiting hour is 5.00 A.M to 7.00 P.M. Entry fee for Adults Rs. 3 and for Children Rs. 2.


Government Museum


It is located on the Beach road offers a excellent collection of sculptured artifacts and crafts of South Indian Temples. You must see this museum because it has much collection. Visiting hour is 9.30 A.M. to 5.00 P.M. (All Friday and Second Saturday are holidays). Entry fee for Adults are rupees 5 and children for rupees 3 and foreigner rupees 100 per head.


Kumari–Hall of history


It is situated south side of Kanyakumari Railway Station. It exhibits the pictures of historical wonders and rare photographs of Kamarajar, Gandhiji and other freedom fighters. Visiting hour is 8.30 A.M. to 8.30 P.M. Entry fee for Adults are rupees 10 and for students rupees 5.


Suchindrum


Suchindrum is a small village which is located 12 KMs away from Kanyakumari and seven KMs away from Nagercoil. This sacred place is situated on the bank of the river Pazhayar. This temple is dedicated to Sri Sthanumalayan. This word denotes Siva, Vishnu, and Brahma. Sthanu means Siva, Mal means Vishnu and Ayan represents Brahma that is Siva, Vishnu and Brahma in one form. It is a place where Indra attained Suchi that is Purification. Visiting hour of this temple is 4.00 A.M to 11.45 A.M and 5.00 P.M to 8.00 PM.


Kanyakumari Bagavathiamman Temple


Kanyakumari is derives its name from Goddess Kanyakumari Amman, the presiding god of the area. The most important temple, the Kumari Amman, is dedicated to goddess Parvathi as a virgin. It is located edge of the ocean.


Udayagiri Fort


It was rebuilt in the region of Marthanda varma, the Venad King, in the year 1741 to 1744. In the early days it has strategic importance. The peoples, who live here, are mostly agricultural peoples. There is a biodiversity park over here.



Mathoor Hanging Bridge


Mathoor Hanging trough is the tallest and longest bridge in Asia, with the height of 115 feet and a length of one KM. It is constructed in the year 1966. This place becomes a tourist importance and hundreds of tourists visit this place


St.Xavier Church


St. Xavier is an outstanding priest visited the coastal area of Tamil Nadu from Goa. In recognition of Xavier’s services, the king distributed a land to him for the purpose of built a catholic church at Kottar. In the year 1544 there was a church in the same place. Here the annual festival is celebrated in the month of November and December lasting for 10 days.


Padmanabhapuram Palace


Padmanabhapuram is one of the ancient historical towns and it is one of the four municipalities in the district. This town is surrounded by fort with an area of 187 acres. The palace has an area of seven acres. It is built with mud and reconstructed with granite by Maharaja Marthanda Varma. Entry fee for adult is rupees 25 and rupees 10 for children





Pechiparai Dam


It is situated 43 KMs away from Nagercoil. This dam in Kalkulam Taluk was constructed in the days of the Maharaja Sri Moolam Thirunal across the river Kodayar. It is designed on the pattern of the Periyar dam in the Madurai district. There is a camp shed caters at the dam side for the visitors. Here the weather condition is very pleasant



Tirparappu Water falls


It is situated 13 KMs away from Pechiparai dam. The river bed is rocky and 300 feet in length. The height of the water fall is 50 feet and the water flows for about seven months in a year. Here, Tirparappu weir has been constructed for the purpose of supplying water to the paddy fields. The district administration has recently built a swimming pool for children over here which is very famous among the children.


Maruthuva Malai


It is also known as Marunthu Vazhum Malai and it has abundant medicinal herbs, forms from part of the Western Ghats. According to legends, it is a fragment of the Sanjeevi Mountain, a piece of which fell down here. It was carried by Hanuman from Mahendragiri to Srilanka for remedial the deadly wounds of Lakshmana. The altitude of the mountain is 800 feet. It is situated 11 KMs away from Nagercoil.


Chitharal


It is a small village located 7 KMs away from Marthandam and 45 KMs away from Kanyakumari. It is very famous for the Rock-cut temple. Hillock at Chitharal has a cave consisting Rock-cut sculptures of Thirthankaras and attendant deities carved inside and outside dated 9th century A.D. and it was converted into Bagavathy temple in the 13th century A.D. Here, vans and cars can go up to the foot of the hill. One has to walk 10 minutes to reach the temple. The jain images are have been preserved by Central Archeological Survey of India



Muttom Beach


It is very famous beach which is 16 KMs away from Nagercoil and 32 KMs away from Kanyakumari. It has beautiful landscaping and high rocks. The sun set view point at Muttom is one of the most famous view points. Here, the century old light-house which is builds by the British. But it is insecure for the tourists since the rocks on which tourists go to see the sea view are slippery and a number of fatal accidents have occurred over the past few years. So the district administration determined to put protecting stainless steel fencing across the whole dangerous areas and also put up small open huts at the rock tops for the tourists to sit and watch the massive sea waves relaxing with safeguard from sun and rain.


Sanguthurai Beach


It is very gorgeous beach resort and it is very suitable for the local population of Nagercoil. It is 10 KMs away from the city. Now the district administration sanctioned a project for the purpose of constructing the children park, seating facility, open huts with Terracotta roofs and lighting facility. Now the entire work has been completed.


Vattakottai(Circular Fort)


Vattakottai is coming under Agasteeswaram Taluk, it is basically granite fort which is six KMs north east of Kanyakumari cape, It is rectangular in shape and covers an area of about three and half acres. This fort is enclosed by walls with 25 to 26 feet height, including the parapet, 29 feet thick at the front, 18 feet corners and 6 feet at the rear.


Chothavilai Beach


It is located 10 KMs away from Kanyakumari. It is one of the best natural beaches in this district. It has high sand dunes on the back ground.


Ulakkai Aruvi


It is a natural waterfall located in Azhagiapandipuram village of Thovalai taluk. Here the water is available in the summer season too. Many tourist people come here for the purpose of bating and to enjoying the nature. The pathway of the forest is lies on Reserve Forest.


Mukkadal Dam


It is a natural dam constructed by T. Chitiraj Maharaja. It provides water to Nagercoil Municipality and it is also proposed to get water from here for Suchindrum and Kanniyakumari. It is one of the famous picnic spot of tourists.
