Tourist places in Vellore

It is one of 32 districts in the Tamil Nadu state of Bharath, headquartered Vellore town. It is one of biggest district in Tamil Nadu state. Vellore District has more tourist place, so let us see in detail.

Vellore Fort

Vellore Fort is situated in heart of the Vellore city. This Fort belongs to 16th century, which is built by Vijayanagara Kings. The fort is well known for its grand ramparts, wide moat and robust masonry. This is one of the excellent tourist sport opened in all days. Timings are 2 pm to 5 pm. Entry fee rupees 5 per person.

Government Museum

Government museum of Vellore District is situated inside the Vellore fort in Lakshmanswami town hall. It has great collection of various types of artifacts like archeology, history, geology and botany. It is opened for all days other than government holidays. It has 2896 exhibits, both displayed and reserved. We can say it is a multipurpose museum. It also has 8 galleries which are District Gallery, Pre history philately gallery, stone sculpture, paintings gallery, Zoology gallery, Coins gallery, Bronze gallery and Anthropology gallery.

Science Park

Vellore Science Park also called as Vellore District Science Centre situated in Sathuvachari east part of the Vellore City. It is one of the four centers in Tamil Nadu developed by Tami Nadu Science and Technology Centre. It has number several galleries including environment, leather and physical science. The main intention of the park is to enable children learn science through play method. It conducts summer camps for students teaching them on physics, chemistry, mathematics, biology, environmental sciences, yoga, psychology and practical experiments. It is also planned to setup 3D theatre at Vellore Science Park.

Vainu Bappu Observatory

It is owned and operated by Indian Institute of Astroyphysics. It is situated in the Javadi Hills, Kavalur nearby Vaniyambadi and Yelagiri which 70 kilo meters away from Vellore city. It has 2.3m diameter, which is largest telescope in Asian continent. It is also called as Kavalur Astronomical Observatory. It also has two other telescope. It was first used in 1986.

Amirthi forest and Zoological Park

It is located under the Javaadhu hills of Tellai across Amirthi River which is 25 kilo meters away from Vellore. The area is 25 hectares and you can find beautiful falls here. Half of the jungle is served as tourist spot other half developed as a wildlife sanctuary. The animals of the park include mongoose, spotted deer, foxes, hedgehog, reason monkeys, love birds, red headed parrots, peacock, tortoises, crocodiles, eagles, wild cats, ducks, wild parrots, pigeons, pythons, rabbits etc.

Srilakshmi Golden Temple

The exquisite temple of Sripuram is a spiritual park located at the foot of a green hills in a place called as “Malaikodi” in the city of Vellore. It is situated between Vellore – Odugathur state highway and at the southern end of the city of Vellore, at Tiurmalikodi. It is located on 100 acres of land and has been established by Vellore-based Sri Narayani Peedam, headed by spiritual guru Sri Sakthi Amma aslo called as Narayani Amma. The temple has gold covering, has excellent work done by artisans specializing in temple art using gold. The design of the temple is star shaped path (It is called as Sri Chakra) with 1.8 km shape.

Jalagandeeswarar Temple

This temple dedicated to Jalagandeeswarar (Lord Siva), is noted for its sculptures and it speaks volumes of the excellent, marvelous craftsmanship of the highly skilled artisans of that period. The sculpture on the left of the entrance is a masterpiece which appreciated by the experts of art and architecture.

Vallimali Sri Thenvenkatachalapathy Temple

It is a Vedic temple which is located in the town of Vallimalai hill near Thiruvalam, Vellore District. It is situated 25 kilo meters away from Vellore and 12 kilo meters away from Thiruvalam.

Churches and Mosques

Assumption Cathedral was 150 years old. It is one of the oldest churches in Tamil Nadu. The Big Mosque, which is located in the heart of the city, headquartered the largest Arabic college in India.

Yelagiri Hills

Yelagiri hill station is situated in Vellore (Vaniyambadi to Tirupattur road). It is surrounded by orchards, rose gardens, and green valleys. However, it is not developed like other hill stations in Tamil Nadu. So, the district administration has now taken up the task of developing Yelagiri Hills into world’s tourist destination by enhancing sports like Paragliding and Rock climbing. Here, some of the places have more attraction like artificial lake, Jalagamparai Waterfalls, YMCA Camp Centre and YASA (Yelagiri Adventure Sports Association) which runs adventure sports like Paragliding etc.

Vellore District has many parks such as, Fort Park & Periyar Park. Periyar Park has one kilo meter extended on foot path, roller-skating ring, battery-operated small motorcycles and birds such as ducks, love birds, parrots, ostrich and guinea fowls are being grown in the park.
