Thiruvarur lies in the Cauvery River basic and the main activity of the district is agriculture. Here, more than 70% of the workforce engaged in agriculture; 14% of work force engaged in cultivation and rest are agricultural laborers. Here the paddy is the main crop which is cultivated in three seasons such as Kuruvai (June to August), Samba (August to January) and Thaladi (January to March). The daily wages of the agricultural workers is higher than the rates fixed by the Tamil Nadu Government, but the number of days for work is very low.

Here, the industries are mostly based on modern rice milling, palm oil refinery, poultry, coir and livestock based. Here, the Tamil Nadu Civil Supplies Corporation operated a modern rice mill and the South India Edible Oil engaged in refining oil is the large scale industries in the town of Thiruvarur District.

There are small service enterprises engaged in automobile servicing, hospitals, hotels, boat repairing and nylon fishnet repairing. Here, there is a daily market and weekly market at Thanjai Salai which is maintained by the municipality. This is a place where fresh vegetables and fish are sold. Almost all major nationalized banks, private banks like City Union Bank, ICICI Bank etc. have their branches in Thiruvarur.
