Tiruvannamalai is a temple city and a foremost important pilgrimage centre in Tamil Nadu. The town is the service and marketing town for the adjacent places. Being the administrative headquarters of the Tiruvannamalai district, Tiruvannamalai has a lot of tertiary (Service sectors) sector activities. Trade and commerce and service activities are the chief contributors to the economy of the town.

  1. In the year 1991, 7.93% of the population was engaged in primary sector, 21.34% in secondary sector and 70.73% in tertiary sector activities.
  2. This town had a female work participation of 11%. Due to the urbanization in the year 1971, there has been dipping in primary sector activities and a comparative increase in the tertiary sector activities
  3. Here, there is a limited agricultural activity in this town.
  4. The Industrial sector involves manufacturing and construction, whose growth has remained constant over the decades. There are several numbers of oil mills, rice mills and agro based industries within the Tiruvannamalai town limits.
  5. The service sector activities of trade, commerce, transport, storage, communication and other services has been growing due to the escalating number of tourists to the town.
  6. The patronage to Girivalam has increased unofficial economic activities around the town.
  7. All major nationalized banks such as State Bank of India, Indian Bank, Central Bank of India, Punjab National Bank, Indian Overseas Bank, Bank of India and private banks like City Union Bank, ICICI Bank, Karur Vysya Bank have their branches in Tiruvannamalai.
